Product Overview

BONDERITE® L-FM M 20A ACHESON, previously called Molydag 20A, is specifically formulated for cold extrusion operations with ferrous metals. This water-based formulation utilizes molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) to form a durable lubricating coating on zinc and manganese phosphate substrates. By formulating the MoS2 into a liquid coating, the application is less messy and cheaper than a tumble-applied powder form. BONDERITE® L-FM M 20A ACHESON can also be used to replace traditional phosphate-based lubricant soaps systems.

Because the lubricant moves with the billet surface during the deformation process and has high adherence in mechanical feed mechanisms, BONDERITE® L-FM M 20A ACHESON can be used for substantial area reductions, allowing for the creation of precisely extruded parts. Operations requiring close tolerances, sharp angles, and complex shapes will greatly benefit from its performance.

After surface preparation, including a phosphate process for specific applications like slugs, BONDERITE® L-FM M 20A ACHESON should be applied in a bath. This method will help control concentration, will create an even lubricant film, and will not release any toxic vapors. It is a concentrated product requiring dilution before application; dilution concentrations will vary. For extreme extrusions, a one-to-one ratio with water is a standard starting point. For less intense extrusions, a higher dilution ratio may be appropriate.

Applications

Cold extrusion of carbon steel, alloy steel, and stainless steel

Features & Benefits

Water-based, molybdenum disulfide coating
Excellent lubricating film
Permits large area reductions
Increases production efficiencies
Enables extrusion of complex shapes with narrow tolerances
Precision extrusion of sharp angles and corners
Application via bath is easy to control and leaves a uniform film thickness
No toxic vapors or fumes
High chemical stability
Extended tool life
Proven alternative to phosphate soap and tumble-applied MoS2 powder

Problems Solved

When applied as a powder, molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) requires additional preparation to prevent spreading away from the work area. Application often leads to wasted powder product, resulting in a messy, more expensive process.

Phosphate-based soap systems are less ideal for precision applications requiring a large area reduction due to inefficient lubrication. The inability to effectively and precisely extrude complex parts can lead to rework, excess scrap, and overall increased costs.
