Product Overview

BONDERITE® L-FM TI-KOTE A (also known as TI-KOTE A) is a white powder that dissolves in cold water to deposit a conversion coating on titanium substrates prior to forming operations. It forms a tight, durable coating on the surface to prevent metal-on-metal contact, acting as a protective barrier. This coating significantly reduces the friction between the titanium surface and drawing die, thereby preventing metal pickup and galling, which can compromise part integrity and dimensional accuracy. Moreover, the coating enables the surface to retain higher amounts of drawing soap, thus ensuring smoother operations, fewer defects, and faster drawing speeds during manufacturing processes. The conversion coating process is self-regulating, meaning the reaction ceases once the maximum coating weight of 1,000 mg/sq ft is achieved, providing consistent performance and eliminating variability in coating thickness. Furthermore, this innovative product removes the need for hydrofluoric acid, simplifying both the application process and subsequent disposal procedures, ultimately enhancing workplace safety while minimizing costs.

Problems Solved

Handling and applying conversion coatings can often be cumbersome and challenging, especially in maintaining optimal adherence to titanium surfaces. This difficulty not only impacts the efficiency of the coating but also affects its durability and performance over time. Poor adherence can lead to galling on the forming die, which further results in the expedited wear and potential breakage of titanium parts throughout the manufacturing process. The resultant slow drawing speeds contribute to excess scrap and significant production inefficiencies, thus increasing operational costs. Furthermore, the traditional use of hydrofluoric acid within these procedures elevates disposal expenses and poses safety hazards that must be scrupulously managed.
